Disc jockey

A disc jockey (also called DJ) is an individual who selects and plays prerecorded music for an intended audience.

The term disc jockey was first used to describe radio announcers who would introduce and play popular gramophone records. These records, also called discs by those in the industry, were jockeyed by the radio announcers, hence the name disc jockey, which was soon shortened to DJs or deejays. Today, there are a number of factors, including the selected music, the intended audience, the performance setting, the preferred medium, and the development of sound manipulation, that have led to different types of disc jockeys. However, today there are many different kinds of 'DJ's' and it does not always mean 'disc jockey' in the traditional sense, for example turntablist DJ's use actual 'discs' whilst radio DJ's may use a number of sound sources including music files, CDs, jingles, and other pre-recorded media.

The physical act of selecting and playing sound recordings is commonly referred to as DJing (or deejaying), playing or spinning. The resulting performance is called a DJ set.

Love Parade

The Love Parade is a popular festival and parade that originated in 1989 in Berlin, Germany, and has now spread throughout the world. Past Love Parades have occurred in Tel Aviv, Mexico City, Acapulco, Vienna, Cape Town, San Francisco, Sydney and Santiago. Only the Acapulco, Tel Aviv, Santiago, and Berlin Love Parades continue to operate.

The Love Parade has its roots in the spirit of a changing Europe. In 1989, it was first celebrated 4 months before the demolition of the Berlin Wall. It was started by the fresh Berlin Underground under the initiative of Matthias Roeingh aka "Dr. Motte". It was held as a political demonstration for peace and international understanding through music.

Until 1996, the parade was held on the famous Berlin "Ku'damm". Since by then, not only the Ku'damm was overcrowded but the streets and even railway tracks near the Ku'damm, too, the parade moved to the "Straße des 17. Juni" which is near the Tiergarten Park in the center of Berlin by the Brandenburg Gate (German: Brandenburger Tor) and provided plenty of space. The center of the parade is the Siegessäule (Victory Column) in the middle of the park, and the golden angel atop the column has become a symbol of the parade.

Many people from Germany, Poland, and other countries travel to Berlin to take part in the Parade — over a million attended in the years 1997 through 2000 and 800,000 in 2001. Attendance at the 2001 festival was significantly lower because the date of the parade was changed with little advance notice. 2002 and 2003 also saw lower figures, and in 2004 and 2005 the parade was canceled due to funding difficulties. In 2006, the parade made a comeback with the help of German exercise studio McFit. The parade saw its highest attendance in over 9 years.

The music played at the events is predominantly electronic dance music: in this case mainly Trance, House, Techno, and Schranz music. Attempts to introduce other music styles, such as hip hop, have failed. Hardcore and Gabber music were part of the parade in early years, but were later removed. They are now celebrated separately on a counter-demonstration called "Fuckparade".

Anyone who wants to experience Love Parade in the middle weekend of July should be aware of the fact that it is louder and more crowded than most concerts. With its water-cooled sound systems on every truck, the parade produces a sound floor of many megawatts. The parade basically lives through those trucks. The trucks usually feature local, or important, clubs and their DJs. It has become a rule that only trucks that have sponsors from a techno related field, such as clubs, labels or stores, are allowed. It costs a lot of money to equip a truck. They are usually open on top and feature dancers. Their box-systems are mounted on the side or the rear. There are two tactics to choose from: Follow a truck that features a style that you like, or have them all pass you so you can see more.

Love Parade is a place where some exhibit and enjoy other people's exhibitionist tendencies. Some attendees enjoy carrying around toys such as pacifiers or facing masks. Often the crowd is imaginative in terms of clothing (or lack thereof) and appearance.

Café del Mar

Café del Mar is a bar located in San Antonio, Ibiza. It is a popular summer tourist destination, noted for its view of the local sunset. Café del Mar is the original "the sunset bar" in San Antonio opened by Ramón Guiral, Carlos Andrea, and José Les in 1978. The translation into English for Café del Mar is "Sea Cafe".

At the end of 2006, Sentosa Island (in Singapore) will see it making waves at its Siloso Beach.

Part of watching the sunset is the music – described as ambient, easy listening music. The bar originally sold their own tapes of the music but a series of Café del Mar CDs have been sold. As of 2006, there are 13 volumes, numerous side compilations, plus 2 albums commemorating the 20th and 25th Anniversary. A total of about 9 million albums have been sold worldwide.

The original first six volumes' tracklists were selected by José Padilla, a DJ then commonly found at the Café del Mar.

In the summer of 2005 Café del Mar celebrated their 25th Anniversary with a special album and a festival on a big stage in front of the sea. Four Café del Mar artists were invited to play live at the festival: D.A.B. (Spain), Tom Oliver (Germany-also on the 25th Anniversary CD), Paco Fernandez (Spain) and La Caina (France).

Buddha Bar

The Buddha Bar is an exclusive and highly-regarded bar and restaurant in Paris, France, and is a Buddha-themed venue serving Asian cuisine. The two-storey dining area is dominated by a large statue of Buddha. The upstairs bar is a large, ornate dragon. The Buddha Bar originally became popular because of the DJ's choice of eclectic, avant-garde music.

Buddha Bar has also opened a venue in Beirut, Lebanon & Dubai, UAE, and New York City. Buddha Bar is also the name of a popular and exclusive, yet unrelated bar in Barcelona.

Compilation CDs are released under the Buddha Bar brand name, some of them have been compiled by David Visan, son of Raymond Visan, who opened the Bar in 1996. These are generally of lounge or "chill-out" music, reflecting that played in the restaurant itself. The series was started by Claude Challe and continues today with different producers. DVDs have been released along side the series.
